Spanish-Speaking Psychiatrist in San Francisco

I am Dr. Mario A. Benítez-López, a board-certified psychiatrist in San Francisco, and I see patients in Spanish. The entire appointment is in Spanish when that is what someone prefers, with no interpreter in the middle.

I trained in medicine in Spanish, in Mexico, before completing my psychiatry residency in the United States. As a physician I can both prescribe and provide the psychotherapy myself, so both halves of a treatment plan are decided in the same room.

This is a private, cash-pay practice, by appointment only. There is a Spanish version of this page at Psiquiatra que habla español en San Francisco.

If you are looking on behalf of a parent or relative

Some people searching for this in English are not the patient. They are looking for a parent, a partner, or a relative who follows English well enough in daily life but not well enough for a conversation about a diagnosis, a medication, or a dose change.

That distinction matters more in psychiatry than in most specialties, because the work is almost entirely conversation. A patient who is translating in their head while describing a symptom gives a less accurate history, and a patient hearing side effects explained through a third party remembers less of it.

You are welcome to make the first call. From there the consultation itself can run entirely in Spanish.

Where I trained

I earned my medical degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, graduating with honors, a distinction given to between five and ten percent of graduating students. I also received the award for outstanding performance on the EGEL-MEDI, Mexico's national medical licensing examination.

I completed my psychiatry residency at the University of Washington, finishing with distinctions in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and collaborative care, and later a master's in clinical research and epidemiology at Stanford University.

I am board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and hold an active California medical license.

What I treat

Anxiety, depression, insomnia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, and couples difficulties.

I also see second opinions, patients with complex medical conditions alongside a psychiatric one, and people whose first treatment attempt did not work.

The two areas where I concentrate the most work are medication management and deprescribing for patients who want to come off a medication rather than start one. Both have Spanish pages: manejo de medicamentos and dejar o reducir un medicamento.

How I see patients

This is a private, cash-pay practice. I do not accept insurance, private or public. If care needs to be paid through a health plan, that plan can provide a list of psychiatrists in its network.

Fees are not published here. Please ask by phone before booking a first appointment.

I see patients by appointment only, at 450 Sutter Street, Suite 1822, near Union Square, and I see patients from San Francisco, Marin County, and the Bay Area.

This is not an urgent or crisis service. If you or someone close to you is in danger or thinking about self-harm, call 988 and press 2 for Spanish, or text the word AYUDA to 988, to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in Spanish 24 hours a day. You can also call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

I trained in medicine in Spanish, in Mexico, and offer both psychotherapy and medication treatment in Spanish.
The whole appointment, with no interpreter. That includes the parts where precision matters most, such as what a medication is for, what dose to take, which side effects to watch for, and when to call me.
Yes. You are welcome to make the first call in English and to come to the first appointment. The consultation itself can then run entirely in Spanish.
No. This is a cash-pay practice and I do not bill any insurance, private or public. Fees are not published on the site, so please ask by phone before booking.
Both. A psychiatrist is a physician and can prescribe; I also completed formal psychotherapy training during residency and continue to practice it, so medication and therapy are planned together rather than split between two clinicians.
This is not an urgent or crisis service, and I do not handle emergencies. Call 988 and press 2 for Spanish, or text the word AYUDA to 988, to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in Spanish 24 hours a day. You can also call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
